Charming former village coal house with a range of potential uses
Originally a small house this brick and tile building then became the village coal house for many years. It measures internally around 13.03 ft long by 10.11 ft wide and has a room on the ground floor and one room on the first floor. It is located next to the village car park and there is no outside space. It is not listed, however lies within a conservation area, and offers a range of potential uses, subject to the necessary consents. The village is located on the east bank of the River Waveney around two miles east of Harleston.

History
Mendham's most famous son, born to a local miller, was Sir Alfred James Munnings (1878 to 1959), known as one of England's finest painters of horses, and as an outspoken enemy of Modernism. An extract of one of his paintings, featuring gypsy Charlotte Gray leading a pony, has been incorporated into the Mendham village sign. Another of Munnings’s favourite models was Old Norman, well into his eighties, who the painter described as his ‘staunchest friend’. He is reputed to have lived in this house on the village street near the entrance to Shearing’s Farm and he could neither read nor write. He had always been hard up and in 1851, desperate for a job, had walked a hundred miles to London with a work gang to get taken on at the Great Exhibition in the Crystal Palace. As Munnings’s odd job man, for eighteen shillings a week, he made the fires and gardened, held the horses for the artist to paint, cleared up the studio after a party and sometimes acted as a model. His wage was twice as much as he had earned in the forties when he left home at four o’clock in the morning and walked five miles to work as a trench digger on the marshes, often going without breakfast to leave more food for his children.
